The more you follow, the more who will return the favour and follow you.
Like facebook, you can interact with fellow twitters.. especially if you are following people that are talking about topics that interest you :)
First priority, login to your account and anyone who is following you, make sure you return the favour and follow them!

Twitter Directories
Head over to Twitterpacks.pbwiki.com and list your twitter address in the appropriate interest/geographical categories to find like-minded tweeple.
Anyone can edit the wiki, the invite code is listed on the entry page.
Automatically follow people who follow you
Use TweetLater to automatically follow anyone that follows you and automatically send them a thankyou tweet or message.
Twitter Housecleaning
Also, a couple of neat little apps that were created for this reason: "See if your Twitter friends follow you back" - both allow you to see the following status of you and your friends on Twitter. They show all of your friends and tell you if they follow you back or not. Sweet. And if you are going on a little twitter clean-up, you won't accidently remove any of those who follow you. http://lessfriends.com/ or http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/ or http://mytweeple.com/
None will work if the Twitter API is down though.. go figure :)

Summize Twitter Friend Finder
Here's a great new tool I found today.

On the Summize site you can search for any term or phrase and see all the twitts that include it. You can filter by language, people, attitudes (positive :-) or negative :-( ) and also translate twitts in other languages to English. You can also subscribe to a particular term/phrase’s feed thus saving you the time of having to go to the Summize site. Summize also allows developers to use their API and integrate Summize’s search results with their own apps.
Do a search for "The Secret", "The Law of Attraction", "Science of Getting Rich" and add some new friends! :)
