Mashable’s Pete Cashmore Moves to California, Set to Deepen Tech Coverage..without VC Funding
LOS ANGELES — It is amazing how Pete Cashmore started Mashable from his home in Scotland at the age of 19, just three years ago, to create one of the most widely read blog about technology and social media. It is among the top 10 most influential blogs in the world.
Pete recently moved to San Francisco and is hiring reporters to cover technology and other
industries.
Pete says Mashable has been cashflow positive since he launched and has not had the need to raise venture money.
I caught up with him earlier this week at Digital Hollywood,

Facebook Marketing “Tricks”
Found a great feed to subscribe to the other day.. @ http://www.allfacebook.com
I found many topics that are of interest to Facebook Marketing, and I thought I’d give him a plug because you’ll find his site is “right up our alley”..
The most interesting post this week has been the Top 12 Facebook Marketing Hacks, which goes through 12 things that “marketers” have been “taking advantage” of to market their product or get noticed.
Who knows how long Facebook would allow this to happen or what risks you take by using some of them (some I feel just should not be done, like tagging your friends in “every” blog post note that you import, or tagging “popular friends” in photos that you upload)..
But I can think of ways to use them in a “helpful” way to both parties.
The other suggestions were:
- joining every event
- wishing everyone a happy birthday (hey, that’s a nice thing to do anyway!)
- engage in poke wars (I can’t imagine this would be very credible)
- switching your birthday regularly (hmm… thats a bit ugly.. dont even know why facebook would allow someone to change their birthday from the time they signup excepting by manual request)
- posting comments on fast-growing groups (I like that idea.. if you have something to genuinely offer the group)
- holding your own events
- setting up pages & re-posting them on your profile
- changing relationship status (weird way to get attention), & more
Here’s some of his other articles that I think you’ll also enjoy..
Facebook has increased the number of visible friends for an individual from 5 to 7. Even more significant is the increase in the number of visible fan pages.
I’ve become a fan of this site and it will be a regular thing for me to check out his latest posts.
Create your own Facebook Application
The other day I found a Facebook app that I was interested in putting on my profile but unfortunately it was defunct.. broken, and I was disappointed because it would be a really great app if it worked and would attract those with the same interest as me.
So I had this brainstorm idea a few hours ago that I’d just make it myself ;)
Seeing all those crappy apps on Facebook, I thought that even a donkey with no programming knowledge like myself would be able to easily create an app, and within a few days/weeks, have hundreds/thousands of targetted traffic to my app and therefore my subscriber base, and therefore my friendsbase, etc, etc.. and they would all be into the same thing as me.. etc !
So first step.. I added the guy of the broken app as a friend and sent a message to ask him how he did it. I expected a conversation where I can maybe convince him to fix it but he just sent an app that was kinda promoting their own hosting but it did have a link to the main Facebook developers page.
I went to the page and thought that it seemed pretty easy, I clicked on Create an New Application..
And then.. went .. “What the?” lol
Callback URL? Canvas Page URL? IP Addresses of Servers? argh! help!
But now I want to create one because it’s free to do, free marketing, instant promotion, instant traffic, and I can just see the potential *stars in my eyes*..
Applications have only been allowed on Facebook since June 2007 – that’s 9 months – and there are already applications selling for $3 MILLION.
Click Here For Current Values Of Top 40 Facebook Applications
I think that’s great, although I don’t intend to make an application just to sell it, it’s the access to targetted traffic that I was after.
To get a feel for the Facebook Application, and whether I’d be able to create my own app, I followed the advice of:
I’ve also been surfin` around trying to find step-by-step guides that I can follow and sites that I might need when I’m creating it.
I found these great resources (I’ll keep adding to this as I find the gems):

- Facebook Query Language
- Improve Reponse Time with Facebook Dialogs Up to 99%

Haven’t found many “tools” for helping with creating of Facebook Apps, but thought I’d create a list starting with the 1 that I did find:
I just found a guide that you have to pay for ($49.95), which I bought.
I wrote to the owner first to find out whether you have to be a “Coder” to apply his techniques, and
he said no, but I haven’t quite worked out how to do anything useful with his
information yet.

If you’re interested in creating a facebook application and have the money but not the time or skills to create your own Facebook App, these sites have programmers hungry to assist.
If it turns out “too hard” to create my app because I’d have to learn a new language or whatever, then I’ll be heading over to these sites:

Tips on setting up your MySpace profile..
- Introduce yourself as a human being, you are human first! Make sure you add your photos. Don’t be embarrassed! :) Add your interests, books, etc,
- Tell your story of how you got to where you are. Everyone has a story. What are your dreams and aspirations?
- Your MySpace profile is not an advertisement, it’s about people connecting with people, like Facebook. First and foremost, it’s “all about you”. Who are you? :)
- Add a slideshow of your photos of yourself, your family, your experiences and your friends. http://www.slide.com
- Upload your photo albums.
- Upload your videos & any mind-movies you’ve made to your MySpace profile.
- Download FriendBlasterPro (free edition, there’s no need to pay because we won’t be using it to spam, nor do we have multiple profiles).
- Surf MySpace using the program for people who would be suitable for the product you are marketing and add them as a friend… it’s just HEAPS easier to add friends this way than the MySpace way.
- The awesome thing about FriendBlasterPro is that it can save the same message, invites, and everything inside the program, so that you don’t have to type them all in each time.
- Comment on their MySpace profile after you’ve added them, or send a message straight after you have requested the add.
- Don’t add more than 40 people at a time.
- Ensure you use the “Time Delay” option.. go to Options -> Time Delay.. you want a natural delay (like 40 seconds and 20 seconds, etc)
- Start your own Group on MySpace
- Whatever you learn on MySpace, can become a future “how-to video for someone else.. keep this in the back of your mind for future video promotion.
- Dont push your product, befriend first, develop a relationship next, after the topic comes up, then you can offer a free copy of your brandable book, if they like it, then you can tell them about your group/blog/site.. this is a “secret to success” method, don’t jump the gun unless THEY initiate it!)
- Remember the big picture.. if we train 100 affiliates to train 100 affiliates, the $$ will be beyond our wildest dreams. You are going to be helping these people closely so building a relationship is important.. just getting random people to signup is a waste unless they are self-starters that know what they are doing because most won’t do anything with it unless you guide them.
a. Develop a Real Relationship
b. Give Them a Free Copy
c. Be Sure They See the Good Things People are Saying
d. If They Like It, tell them about your group/blog/site/list.
e. Don’t Be Pushy.
f. Don’t Treat Them with Anything but the Highest Respect.
Facebook Fan Pages: How To Create and Promote Yours
Fantastic Video from the great Mari Smith showing you why you need your own Facebook Page and how to get started, as well as some great tips on how to create many facebook pages for your business.
2 Facebook Accounts – Personal and Business?
I have 2 facebook accounts – One for Personal and One for Business
One for my friends & family to “throw sheep at me” and generally find out about my “feelings” and catching up with old school friends that Ill never see again in real life, posting embarrassing photos, etc. Only people that I have “met in real life” go on this profile.
And one for Networking, that everyone can see, that is for posting all things related to .. actually.. who I really am.. meeting people that are interested in internet marketing, blogging, twitter, and the law of attraction etc.
My friends and family are “not into” the same things I am, and would not understand my .. what I call… “my business” account at all.. They also would definitely not appreciate their photos being seen “by just anyone around the world”, nor would they ever wish to be contacted by strangers online (whereas.. I love meeting new people).
I actually got the idea of creating 2 accounts when my sister went off at me for posting a family photo – she didn’t want just anyone to see (nothing wrong with it, just that she didn’t want “strangers” to see it, she was worried about stalkers, etc).
I love meeting new people and joining facebook groups and interacting with people with the same interests as me.. and I saw it as a bit of a dilemma :)
And my “networking” friends would probably not understand my “old school life” profile.. with old school photos and family throwing sheep etc..
I personally think having 2 facebook profiles is an necessity, although saw lately that people have been saying that facebook frowns upon it.. but I haven’t found anything about it on the facebook faqs, etc.. so have been trying to find out facebook’s “official stance” on it.
If I were to get rid of any account, it would be my personal one with my friends and family on it lol.. sad as it may be, I’m the “real me” when Im interacting in my “business” profile, that’s my true passion.. but its great to catch up with people from my past, and be a ratbag again with them.
If I could find the facebook official stance on it, I think I would just invite my friends to join my business profile and just get rid of the personal one, but it makes it so much easier to relax with friends when I login to the personal one, and chat business stuff in my business one…
I dunno.. I really don’t want to merge the 2, they are completely different “parts” of me, that I don’t want “together”..
What do you think?
Facebook Friend Banks
Develop Alliances
If you build up your “Friend Banks” you’ll be thanking yourself later, if you don’t develop your relationship with those “friends”, you will be doing the work for nothing.
40% of all the time you spend on your “online business” should be spent attracting new clients.
Today’s Checklist:
Go on a Friend frenzy today to get new friends each on the following:
Special Instructions for Friend Requests
That being said.. there are some basic rules that you want to follow.
1) When you are sending friend requests always include a personal message and only send the same message to 5 people before sending a different one. I personally send a different one to everyone that I request, it’s not hard to adjust the messages and make them more personal.
Whenever you’re requesting a friend you should always include a personal message of how you know them or if you know one of their friends mention that name and what kind of business or reason you’re contacting them.
- Always address the person by name “Hiya John”..
– If you know something about them, always include in the message something positive about it.
– If you have a mutual friend, you can reference them in the message
– If you are a mutual “fan” of a guru, you can reference them in the friend request
– Reference the group that you are both a member of: “hey Sarah! I saw you in The Secret group, I just signed up and would like to be friends so I can network with you“
2) Don’t add too many friends per day.. your new friends aren’t going to be much use to you if you get your account banned.
I added about 200 friends over a period of 2 months, and now I hardly ever need to add anyone
3) Don’t spam or post your “ad” to people’s walls.. people are doing this and getting away with it lately, but facebook frowns upon it. The only place that facebook allows you to advertise is in a group that you’ve created.. so use your groups for that, not as graffiti on people’s walls.
4) Don’t mix personal with business – It’s much easier to keep things straight when you have an all-business or all-personal account.

Spice up your MySpace Bulletins with Photo and Audio Shoutouts
If you’re looking for a better way for your bulletins to get noticed on MySpace, then this is the right tool for you!
Well 2 tools really: SnapVine and PhotoShoutout.
First.. about SnapVine..
“Snapvine brings voice and mobility to social networks. Using the snapvine VoicePlayer™, users are able to safely communicate — in their own voices — with their online community. Unlike with other solutions which require expensive handsets and complicated downloads, snapvine’s easy-to-use products work on any cell phone, with any carrier. Snapvine is FREE and those leaving messages do not have to be registered with snapvine to do so.”
One could think of Snapvine as an online voice recording service that allows mobile phone users to add voice comments to blogs – broadcasting whatever message they would like.
You can post directly to MySpace or Facebook, and it also has automatic integration for: Bebo, Flixster, Tagged, BlackPlanet, myYearbook, Friendster, Hi5, IMVU, Asiantown, Xanga, Vampirefreaks, Live Spaces, Freewebs, Hoverspot, Piczo, MyCrib, Migente, orkut, Vox, LiveJournal, TypePad, Blogger, Multiply, Netvibes, & Pageflakes.
Signup to SnapVine: http://www.snapvine.com
Next.. Photo Shout Out..
Photo Shout Out is a great way of creating a personalized message that combines your voice while attaching them to your favorite pictures and photos.
Just choose a MySpace picture (or log into Photobucket) and record a message with your computer microphone or by dialing a telephone number.
And you can post it directly to your bulletin and automatically notify your friends.
Shouts can be sent to friends as a message, bulletin or comment.
With just a few quick steps, a MySpace user could add an online module to his or her page that allows friends to leave recorded voice comments.
If you want to stand out amongst the crowd.. these 2 tools could really be useful for you, especially on Facebook & MySpace.
Get the Photo Shoutout app on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/photoshoutout
You can embed your code anywhere:
Example:
This is what it looks like if you post it to your MySpace profile:
You can also post a cool widget like this to your blog, website, or squeeze pages and they will instantly be updated when you call in your blog or record one from the site!
Er, which for some reason is stuffing up the formatting in this post.. but I’ve played with it enough for the day.. my sis just had a baby!!! So heading down to Melbourne to see her.. :)
