Wordpress Plugins
Viva Plugins & Themes – no more?
I’m creating this post to redirect all my links that were directly linking to Viva’s websites because it seems like there is something wrong with their domain right now (no matter what link you click on, it requests that you login).
I’ve written to them (via a blog post because their contact details are also attached to that domain (mediatricks.biz) and hope to receive a reply, but in the meantime, it does look like they have either lost access to that domain or that Viva is no more.
Where are all the NEW Wordpress posts?
Where are all the NEW Wordpress posts?
Thanks for asking! Oh.. you didn’t.. well maybe you noticed that there hasn’t been any new posts on this blog ..
Everything has moved to PennyButler.com
Wordpress & Social Media Tidbits
The reason is, I’m moving all the sub-domains of my domain back to the main domain to make one site related to Wordpress & Social Media rather than having all the topics separated. This Wordpress blog started out as my "test" site for new plugins, I never had the intention to keep writing about Wordpress, but I love it so much now that of course I’ll be continuing to test and share my finds.
Why the move?
The number #1 reason is to make the blog go faster, having many sub-domains, each with their own Wordpress blog is causing all of them to load a lot slower and it’s driving me nutty.
The second reason is that keeping them all up-to-date and fresh has become too much of a task. I have 27 different websites and with all the sub-domains on top, it’s a never-ending task trying to keep them all updated. The Social Media & Wordpress sub-domains are topics of interest to the virtually the same audience, so if I can merge them all into the one site, it will make it easier to maintain, be of more interest to the same audience (I hope!), with the added benefit of making things a lot faster.
I’ve already imported all of the posts from the sub-domains into my main blog, and in the coming months will update all the image links and internal links and then the blogs will be shut down and redirected to the main blog http://pennybutler.com
pennybutler.com/wordpress has moved to http://pennybutler.com
pennybutler.com/facebook has moved to http://pennybutler.com
twitter.pennybutler.com has moved to http://pennybutler.com
I’ve been adding the new posts there since August, so if you are looking for the new stuff, head over to PennyButler.com
20+ Wordpress Plugins for your Membership Site
Do you want your own membership site?
Post Updated today (16th Feb 2010). Here are some Wordpress Plugins that I found that might be useful if you are setting up your own community/directory/membership site or just want to have some protected pages/posts for special users. They are not in any particular order, for example, my fave is the one at the end. Each have their own features/benefits and price-points that will suit different budgets and uses.
MemberWing
The new free wordpress membership plugin – MemberWing allows to convert your existing blog into membership site without any changes or re-designs.
By inserting small text marker “{+++}” inside any article (old or new) – the content of it will become “protected” and available only to registered premium members. Simply put – anything that was before the marker – is visible for everyone – so put your teasers here. Anything after the “{+++}” marker will only be visible to users who are “Gold” or “Platinum” members. This is great feature that allows search engines to index and rank free text “teasers” part of your blog/website.
Once activated, plugin created 4 separate group members – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. So you may (if wanted to) have 4 classes of contents and charge fees accordingly to access each class of contents. The way you mark contents of your articles for each group is the same simple one – via markers that separate free teasers from premium “juicy” part. {+} – Bronze members, {++} – Bronze and Silver members, {+++} – Bronze, Silver and Gold members, etc..
Membership plugin MemberWing supports latest version of self-hosted Wordpress 2.6+ and works on any hosted account that allows wordpress installations.
There are 3 payment options, Free, $149.95 (Pro), and $295 (unlimited) – the free plugin doesn’t support Gradual Content delivery, affiliate management, intelligent mixing of different levels of content, aweber integration, recurring payments, etc, and it also has a link-back to the main site.
EasyPayPal
EasyPayPal allows you to make money from your WordPress site by collecting a subscription payment from your users.
1) Hide text from non-subscribers with [pay][/pay] tags. Use “teasers” in your posts.
2) Create instant PayPal buttons in any post with simple [paybutton] tags.
3) Charge fees for content authoring, triggered from the post editor page. Perfect for job boards.
4) Create custom subscription pages with multiple subscription options.
5) Create pay-per-view post text. Hide text and links behind ‘Buy Now’ buttons.
The plugin is free, but there is no longer any ’support’, it’s offered ‘as-is’.
WP Members
WP-Members is a plugin to restrict WP content to be viewable by registered site members. It is designed to work “out-of-the-box” with no modifications to your theme, but also to be scalable for those that want to customize the look and feel, or want to restrict only some content. The plugin adds fields to the registration process to include name, address, phone, and email.
Amember.com
This is the membership plugin (also a system) that Michel Fortin uses on his blog after his readers recommended it to him when he was looking.
It’s $179.95, and it works with nearly every CMS & forum software out there, including Wordpress, Drupal, e107, Joomla, Moodle, Phpfox, Xoops, etc, and can integrate all the popular autoresponder systems. You can download a 30 day trial here.

SumaWordpress Subscription Management and Billing plugin (Suma)
Suma is plug-in component for the WordPress publishing system. It provides Subscription Management and Billing functionality which transforms WordPress into a pay-to-view, subscription-based content publishing platform.
With Suma, an administrator can restrict access to a Wordpress website’s pages, posts and comments to paid subscribers only. Non-subscribers see only the title, or excerpt of the post depending on the administrator’s preference.
It is $199 and provides a free 14 day trial.
TDO Mini FormsThis plugin allows you to add a form to your website that allows your readers (including non-registered) to submit posts.
TDO Mini Forms has been used to turn Wordpress into a Forum and a Contact Manager. This plugin allows you to add a form to your website that allows non-registered users and/or subscribers (configurable) to submit posts. The posts are kept in “draft” until an admin can publish them (also configurable).
The plugin provides an extensive moderation view so administrators and editors can see posts awaiting approval and publish or delete them. Administrators can also ban specific users and IPs from using the form. Administrators can also “Trust” specific users. This means that when they use the form, their posts are automatically published. This does not give them any other rights or permissions using the Wordpress software, it only affects usage of the form. This applies to user and IP bans as well. There is even an option to automatically trust users after so many approved submissions. (It should be noted that submissions from users that can already publish using the normal Wordpress UI, will be automatically published.)
Members OnlyMembers Only is a WordPress plugin that allows you to make your blog only viewable to visitors that are logged in. If a visitor is not logged in, they will be redirected either to the WordPress login page or a page of your choice. AlephAleph implements profiles, paginated and customizable user lists, and some characteristics of social networks, like friends and sets. It supports localization and pretty permalinks. Suggestions, bug reports and fixes (specially security & bug fixes) are welcomed. PHP 5 is required.
User Lists
Using Aleph, users become a important part of WordPress. If you run a site with WordPress, probably some users are authors, some are contributors, and most of them are only suscribers. With Aleph each user has his own profile, even if there are no public posts by that user.
Also, it is possible to browse in “user lists” (named “User Views” in the plugin). There is one user list included in Aleph: the “all registered users” view. You can easily define other views through the hooks used in the plugin or through view registration. Now it is possible to filter authors (users with at least one public post) and by some meta key.

Also, worth checking out, if you plan on creating a very large membership site, then you might want to consider Drupal. A word of warning however.. Wordpress is way easier to use, and Drupal requires a steep learning curve, as you’re probably already aware from my many "Bloody Drupal" Twitter posts. See my Drupal site.

OIO PublisherThis plugin (amongst a zillion other things) allows users to "pay" you to write posts on your blog. I use it on many of my blogs – you can also set it to "free" so that users provide content for free on your blog (you moderate). It’s mostly an ad-system, where people can login and pay for ad spots on your blog, but I thought it’s worth mentioning here because of the write-post feature.
These 2 blog posts:- Developing a Tourist Community Site With WordPress (Amir on Lorelle’s site)
- How to Use Wordpress as a Membership Directory (Chris Cagle)
The first, is a new post by Amir who is creating a Tourist Community site with Wordpress and has asked for help from fellow web-developers to do it, people have already commented on the post with their suggestions and tips.
The second is a step-by-step by Chris Cagle, who has already setup their blog as a membership site, and includes which plugins he’s used and suggested ways to modify your themes.
Digital Access Pass
Didn’t see it at the time of originally posting this list, but was mentioned to me in the comments below. This ended up being the plugin I chose to buy.
- Can take your already uploaded content and make whichever you choose "private", then as customers pay, they have access to the content. You can choose to give customers access to the content daily (Day One: this content, Day Two: this content), etc. and if the customer stops paying, you can configure it so that the customer still has access to the content they already purchased, and if they start paying again, they pickup right where they left off and continue onto the content they just paid for.
- Supports PayPal, Clickbank, and 1ShoppingCart.
- Automatically has an inbuilt affiliate program that can pay per lead, and/or per sale.
- Supports Free Trials so that members can trial for however many days/weeks/months before they get charged
- Comes with an Upsell and One-Time-Offer plugin
- You can also include content that is NOT part of your Wordpress site (your course site, your downloads)
- Supports recurring payments and one-time purchases
- Unlimited membership levels, Unlimited Users, Unlimited Email Autoresponders
- When a visitor comes to your blog, they only see the non-member content, and you don’t have to do anything to your existing content to make it hidden (this actually is the main reason why I like this plugin.. it’s too painful to have to edit every page.. I can just "highlight" the post from a list in the backend and add it to a "product" and it’s automatically protected)
- Automatic subscription management, multiple recurring cycles, or pay as you go, or pay-per-view
- Supports Autoresponder services like Aweber, GetResponse, 1Shoppingcart and Constant Contact – but if you aren’t a member of any of those, it has an inbuilt autoresponder (unlimited) so you don’t even need to pay for a 3rd party service.
- The installation wasn’t particularly user friendly but I managed it – however they do offer free installation so they can do all that for you (I just couldn’t wait – I wanted to install it "right now" lol)
- Members can be awarded "X" credits for each monthly subscription payment and use those credits to purchase any content that ‘they’ are interested in for that month instead of receiving the content in order of what you chose.
- You can setup reminder autoresponders to notify YOU – the Admin – that this customer is on day "x" or has reached level "x" and you might want to follow up with them personally to see if they able to login to their account, have any problems/suggestions, etc.
Wordpress Members List Plugin
Another plugin that was found through the comments section that I missed the first time around. It’s just used for listing your wordpress members in a page.
The Members List Plugin enables you make a post in your wordpress site that will list all of your wordpress members. When looking at the listing of members you may also sort through the members based on first name, last name, email address, Link or any number of user meta fields you designate. Employing pagination you are able to page through your search results as well as sort your results based on last name, first name, registration date or email.
